Existing senior care technology forces a binary choice: surveillance or trust. Camera systems feel invasive; call buttons are reactive and limited. Building something genuinely different required integrating constrained conversational AI, real-time computer vision, Apple Watch health data, and a HIPAA-compliant cloud infrastructure — all in a product designed for a population where design failures carry real consequences.

Sierra was engaged to build Grace end-to-end. The platform has four interlocking components: a conversational AI companion with system-level behavioral constraints (no infantilizing language, no emotional manipulation, rate-limited adaptation that is reversible by design); a computer vision safety system running on on-premise edge hardware for real-time fall detection, gait analysis, and abuse prevention; a HIPAA-compliant cloud infrastructure on GCP with a fully event-driven architecture; and an accessibility-first design system built and validated for senior audiences, including full WCAG-compliant token coverage.

• Designed and built a constrained AI companion with system-level language controls and predictable, rate-limited behavioral adaptation. • Architected a computer vision pipeline on Mac Mini edge hardware for real-time fall detection, gait analysis, and spatial awareness — with on-device face detection to minimize data transmission. • Built a HIPAA-compliant GCP event infrastructure using EMQX, Pub/Sub, and BigQuery with JWT-authenticated, role-based access controls. • Delivered an accessibility-first design system with full WCAG-compliant token coverage validated specifically for senior audiences.

The internal TestFlight beta launched in April 2026 with the AI companion, face detection onboarding, and full cloud connectivity operational. Apple HealthKit and fall detection API access has been approved. The computer vision pipeline is delivering real-time gait and transition analysis in production, with room safety monitoring and abuse detection in active development. Gracecare is bringing a genuinely differentiated product to a market that has seen little meaningful innovation in decades.
