Overview
1
The SMS service needed to be rebuilt for performance and stability at high message volume and high concurrency. But the internal engineering team was fully committed to the core product roadmap, and pulling engineers off it to absorb a major refactor would have cost significant velocity at exactly the wrong time. The problem required senior-level capacity without management overhead — someone who could embed, do the work, and hand it back cleanly.
2
Sierra embedded a Staff Engineer directly with Recharge's team for 18 months to own the refactor end-to-end. Working inside Recharge's existing workflows, standards, and tooling, Sierra's engineer rearchitected the SMS service for performance and stability under high-volume loads, then delivered the bug fixes and feature extensions required for full integration into the core platform. The in-house team retained complete ownership of the core roadmap throughout.
3
• Rearchitected the SMS service from the ground up for performance and stability at 10M+ user scale and high message concurrency. • Delivered bug fixes and feature extensions required for full integration into Recharge's platform ecosystem. • Embedded directly within the in-house engineering team, operating inside existing workflows, standards, and review processes. • Maintained clean documentation and handoff materials so internal engineers owned and understood everything built.
4
The new Recharge SMS service exceeded performance targets and is now a core pillar of the company's subscription retention functionality. The in-house team stayed focused on the core product roadmap without disruption from start to finish. Product velocity was maintained, and Recharge gained a fully integrated, high-performance SMS capability without diverting internal engineering resources to a refactor that wasn't in their roadmap.
